UCLA - San Fernando Valley Psychiatry Residency Program. Residents gain experience and training in comprehensive psychiatric services in both inpatient. UCLA San Fernando Valley Program Fellowship, Addiction Psychiatry, 2017 - 2018.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center

Our program “home” is Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, a county hospital located at the north end of the San Fernando Valley, about 30 minutes away from UCLA and 35 minutes from Downtown Los Angeles. It is a beautiful campus at the foothills of the San Gabriel Mountains. The facility operates under the County of Los Angeles Department of Health Services and provides 377 inpatient beds. While the current main building opened in 1987, the site has served as a hospital since 1920, first as a tuberculosis sanitorium. Today, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center serves the needs of low income and indigent patients as well as the surrounding middle class community. It is also a referral center for northern Los Angeles County, capturing patients from the San Fernando, Santa Clarita, and Antelope Valleys.

Olive View has 10 internal medicine ward teams and one critical care medicine service. In addition, Olive View provides acute care services through the Emergency Department and Urgent Care Clinic. The outpatient clinics include a full complement of continuity and subspecialty clinics. Additionally, housestaff provide consultation for patients on the surgical, obstetric/gynecologic, and psychiatric services. Subspecialty fellows and full-time clinically oriented faculty provide consultations, procedural services, and supervision. Olive View-UCLA Medical Center is one of the main training sites for other UCLA residency programs, including UCLA Internal Medicine, Neurology, Emergency Medicine, General Surgery, ENT, Orthopedics, Plastics, Urology, Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Pediatrics, OB-Gyn, Psychiatry, and Radiology.

Olive View has a unique patient population with wide-ranging pathology. This population is younger than most, with an average age between 40 and 50. Approximately 50% of patients are Hispanic; the other 50% are Caucasians, Asians, African-Americans and many other diverse ethnicities. The dynamics of the training environment translate into a rich internal medicine experience in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. Such favorable circumstances have made Olive View one of the most popular rotations not only for the residents of other training programs in Los Angeles, but also for students at UCLA and nationally.

Olive View-UCLA Medical Center offers a great learning atmosphere with outstanding teaching faculty who are very approachable. Our philosophy is that patient care should be excellent while learning should be enjoyable. Our nurses are amazing: they are patient, effective, and cooperative, and enjoy working with our housestaff to provide superior care for all patients. Additionally, our support staff is highly trained, responsible, and friendly. We have excellent ancillary services: for example, routine phlebotomy is scheduled every 4 hours and available STAT 24 hours a day.

Above all, Olive View has a very appreciative patient population. Our patient satisfaction survey reveals that nearly all of our patients are very satisfied with the quality of care they receive at Olive View. One of our interns said it best when asked why she chose us: “I felt that at Olive View I would work hard and be cared about.” We have said this before, but will say it again: residency training is hard work at any first-rate institution. However, very few programs welcome you into their family the way Olive View-UCLA does, which emphasizes a humane, balanced program centered around the resident.

Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center

Ucla San Fernando Valley Psychiatry Residency Program

The Mid-Valley Comprehensive Health Center expands the ambulatory experience with a primary care clinic that is more akin to the private managed care model. The facility continues to serve the county population, and is located in Van Nuys in the center of the San Fernando Valley. Internal medicine faculty are associated with the David Geffen School of Medicine and Olive View, and the clinic serves as a clinical site for both the UCLA Family Medicine and Olive View-UCLA Internal Medicine programs. Housestaff spend 1-2 clinic sessions per ambulatory block here.

Ronald Reagan-UCLA Medical Center

Although UCLA has a separate Internal Medicine Residency program, the UCLA-Olive View program is sponsored through UCLA and the two programs share identical housestaff benefits. Our residents rotate at UCLA for medicine wards, CCU, MICU and Geriatrics rotations, while their residents rotate at Olive View for medicine ward rotations. UCLA is our “sister” hospital and we enjoy a healthy and forward-looking relationship.

UCLA Medical Center is comprised of the Ronald Reagan-UCLA Medical Center, a 517-bed state-of-the-art hospital that opened in Spring 2008, the Center for Health Sciences, the Medical Plaza outpatient facility with complete outpatient diagnostic and therapeutic facilities, including an outpatient surgical center and rehabilitation unit, and the Neuropsychiatric Hospital.

More than 300,000 people from Los Angeles, across the country, and around the world come to UCLA Medical Center each year to receive care from some of the world’s best healthcare providers.

UCLA Medical Center is an active tertiary and quaternary center. It houses the largest transplant center in the world and attracts many patients seeking expert care for a range of unusual illnesses. The hospital is also a National Cancer Center and has been awarded NIH Center grants in Cardiology, Pulmonary Diseases and Oncology.

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center

Because of our relationship with UCLA, residents have the opportunity to rotate at one of the best-rated areas at this hospital: the inpatient Geriatrics Unit. Residents get experience with inpatient Geriatric Medicine, and are exposed to a “private” community based hospital.

Santa Monica-UCLA Medical Center and Orthopaedic Hospital is a 315-bed, evolving academic medical center with a longstanding tradition of community care. One of the two hospital campuses of the UCLA Health System, the medical center features many outstanding clinical services, and is the inpatient home of the UCLA Geriatrics Program, ranked #2 in the United States, as well as UCLA’s highly regarded orthopaedic, spine, and general medicine programs.
